Confused

Hi Guys,

Im new on here, I live down in Newcastle, just going through my Course at the moment in order to apply for SIA badge (is this a rip off or what?).

Im 26, fit, 14.5 stone and an amateur boxer to a reasonable standard (not for a moment suggesting punching customers, unless necessary, but im hoping it will stand me in good stead for not taking any)

I will be totally new to this and to be quite honest its something i want to do but i am apprehensive about getting started. I have enrolled in a methods and tactics course with the trainers doing the course, to give me some techniques for ejecting people and dealing with glass/knife attacks.

I will be approaching my job with an open mind, brains over brawn ideally and looking for tips from the guys who have been there and done it. I know Glen has as he horsed me out of blue when i was about 17, i thought better of struggling when he got hold of me.

Any tips much appreciated.

Thanks

Iain

Welcome Iain.

Glad to hear you are planning to approach the job in the right manner. Always, always talk to the punters in a manner that doesn't demean or belittle them. Have a wee joke or bit of banter with them. Think about how you would like to be treated by the guys on a door when you are out on the town. If you can get your patrons onside from the begining then your pretty much set IMO.

That would be my No.1 tip for you mate. The only way to get into the full swing is to get on a door with a good team and through time, you'll pick up all the small but very important things that will help you in the job that no courses or classroom training can teach.

Good luck mate.

Adam Smile

Thanks Adam,

To be honest, ive got a good job lined up. Its a good venue, with a door team of about 7 men with about 50 years of experience between them.

That said i have seen them display attitudes which i have felt have added to the flames, probably born out of frustration of drunks not listening, but that is something i will try to avoid.

As far as the door supervisors course it seems to me to be powerpoint hell and a means to pass an exam (which looks absurdly easy).

The methods and tactics one is run by a guy from newcastle who has done doors for years and practices numerous martial arts so i thought the £40 he wanted for that day was worth it.

My course cost me £195 (DS one) is that about right?

Cheers

Thats about right Iain, We can get them anything from £135 to £250 up here, varies from college to college and provider to provider, so you didnt do to bad.

Obviously you know its another £245 now to get your actual license from the SIA.

Adam's about covered it really, Just choose your first door carefully, don't be getting involved with heavy handed crews who will ruin your reputation and make it difficult to move to another venue.

Its all about being personnable, approachable, and being able to persuade folk to do what you want them to do in often tricky situations.

If your a good guy, you will not go wrong Very Happy
